You could’ve bumped into Jane Austen in Kintbury!
Today’s post was written by local historian and student of Spanish Learning Club Penny Stokes. This short post tells us some interesting things about Kintbury, it is written in English and it has an accompanying translation in Spanish so that you can guide yourself if necessary. I have attached a recorded reading of the audio for some listening practice.
KINTBURY
En la época medieval, Kintbury era una pueblo más grande que Hungerford, y solía tener un mercado semanal. Hoy es un pueblo con una población de 2,534 habitantes.
In medieval times Kintbury was a larger town than Hungerford, and used to hold a weekly market. Today it is a village with a population of 2,534.
Jane Austen visitaba regularmente la vicaría de Kintbury porque su hermana Cassandra estaba prometida para casarse con el hermano del vicario. No se llevó a cabo ningún matrimonio, porque el prometido murió de fiebre amarilla en las Indias Occidentales en 1797, pero Jane y Cassandra continuaron visitando a la familia en la vicaría de Kintbury hasta 1816, un año antes de la muerte de Jane Austen.
Jane Austen was a regular visitor to the vicarage at Kintbury, because her sister Cassandra was engaged to marry the brother of the vicar. No marriage took place, because the fiancé died of yellow fever in the West Indies in 1797, but Jane and Cassandra continued to visit the family at Kintbury vicarage until 1816, a year before Jane Austen died.

According to an ancient legend, the great bell of Kintbury church was cast into the river during a storm. The local wizard said that it must be pulled out by moonlight, and in silence, by twelve white heifers led by twelve young women dressed in white. All was going well until the local witch broke the silence by crying out, whereupon the chain snapped and the bell fell back into the river, never to be recovered.
